As I was walking to Tsukiji Station, I came to a place that is impossible to miss. Tsukiji Hongan-ji, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple. This is not your usual Japanese architecture, but more of a homage to Indian religious buildings.
While there has been a temple at this site since around 1657, the current Hondo was built between 1931 to 1934. Designed by Ito Chuta who was a leading architect in Japan. He was also responsible for the design of the Daiden at Zojo-ji and Emperor Meiji's Shrine at Meiji Jingu. Both were rebuilt in later years but they followed his designs.
So much of what is here is big. Including this statue of the sect's founder, Shinran Shonin. This statue is similar to ones found elsewhere.
Since I was headed to some place else and feeling a little drenched from the rain, I did not go inside. Next time. However I did enjoy seeing these rather Assyrian looking komainu with wings.
Very impressive guardians.
